Your guide will show you the district’s most amazing constructions such as the Armenian and Catholic churches, the very old quarters and the breath-taking walkways. The second part of your tour leaves the present behind and takes you way back to the times of the Byzantine Empire. The hillside where we now find Galata was originally a large orchard known as Peran en Sykais, the Fig Field on the Other Side, meaning on the other side of the Golden Horn, one of the most beautiful rivers in Turkey. With the rise of the Byzantine Empire, it became Galata when the emperor Theodosius II constructed a huge fortress upon it.
