Marvel at the vestiges of the Roman civilisation in Provence, with visits to the breathtaking Pont du Gard and the amphitheatre at Nimes. Augustus's gate, the amphitheatre and the Maison Carrée, one of the best-preserved temples in the Roman world as well as a visit to the wonderful town of Uzes is all part of this five and a half-hour tour. Built by the romans in the first century, the Pont du Gard is a stone aqueduct built by the Romans to supply Nimes with water from a spring at Uzès. At Nimes, be awed by the roman amphitheatre which can seat more than 16,000 people. Modernised with a removable roof, it is still in use today for rock concerts and other performances. It is also a real treat to see the Maison Carrée in all its glory, looking as good as the day as it was built in 16BC. As the seat of a duke, a bishop and a consul, Uzès has preserved its character as a medieval stronghold. In this charming town you can see the picture-postcard Place aux Herbes, home to a delightful, colourful market and otherwise a relaxing shady spot to rest and soak in the ambiance. Admire the Fenestrelle bell tower with its many arched windows and which lends itself to its other name, the ‘Window Tower’. The 42-metre-high circular tower is the belfry of the cathedral of St Theodorit, which is home to the relics of said saint.
