Few cities have endured so much tragedy in their recent past as Phnom Penh. This emotional half-day tour takes you to some of the locations most closely associated with the darkest chapter in Cambodia’s history. There will be heart-rending moments detailing some of the unspeakable crimes visited on ordinary people during the four-year reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge. The tour starts where it all began, with a visit to the location where journalists camped out in 1975 on the eve of the Khmer Rouge takeover. You will see a haunting building that has been left burned-out and bullet-holed as it stood after the war. Then it is time to confront Cambodia’s bloody past with a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. This former school served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre, and is a poignant reminder of the sheer brutality of what happened in this impoverished country. Then head out of the city to the Choueng Ek Memorial, where a pagoda made up of thousands of human skulls marks the site of one of the notorious Killing Fields. This shocking memorial brings home the inhumanity of the Khmer Rouge regime. The scale of the bloodshed that befell Phnom Penh can be seen by the fact that its population declined from 370,000 to 32,000 during this totalitarian nightmare.
