Built in a gothic style, the castle was founded in 1348 by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia and was a symbol of the greatness of the Kingdom of Bohemia. It withstood numerous attacks and sieges, most famously a seven month siege by the Hussites in the 15th century during which even dead bodies were catapulted over the walls.
