The museum is located in the stunning 16th century Villalón Palace, a remarkable relic of Renaissance architecture. The permanent collection covers to 19th century Spanish art with a particular emphasis on Andalusian themes. The works are displayed in four sections: Old Masters; Romantic Landscape and Costumbrismo; Précieux style and naturalist painting; and the fin-de-siècle. Each offers a differing yet powerful vision of a world that is no more but which will never cease to arouse our curiosity. In the Old Masters, you can admire a collection of religious works dating to the Renaissance while in the Romantic Landscape and Costumbrismo section see pieces that are both captivating to look at and thought-provoking. Here, you can observe paintings such as Eugenio Lucas Velázquez’s Maja with a Small Dog and Manuel Barrón y Carrillo’s Port of Malaga. Traditional Andalusian pastimes such as bullfighting and flamenco feature prominently in the Précieux style and naturalist painting section while the fin-de-siècle collection offers new perspectives on similar themes. The Romantic Andalusia package includes admission to the Thyssen, the city’s folk museum (Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares) and the Malaga Wine Museum.
