Come and discover the oldest Transporter Bridge in the world, the rough coastline and fine sand beaches, the historical and typical Basque fishermen villages, the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai, designated by Unesco and the emblematic village of Gernika with the Assembly Hall & the Sacred Tree. The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve is an estuary in the Bay of Biscay that covers an area of 220 square kilometres. The hydrographic basin is composed by small streams that join in a large salt marshland bordered by high cliffs. The countryside around it is occupied by meadows, oaks and plantations of Pinus radiata. The coast is covered with woods of Quercus ilex and Arbutus unedo. The flora includes 615 recorded species and fauna 318 species of vertebrates. The area contains remnants from different ages of the human evolution. The Santimamiñe cave with artifacts from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age seems particularly worth mentioning in this respect. This region's economy relies on metallurgy, fishing, farming, forestry and tourism. Some 45,000 people live within this area, especially in the towns of Bermeo and Gernika. Gernika is a small town famous for having been bombed by Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe in 1937, as depicted in the painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso. Languages English and Spanish.
